FAQ

Here are answers to some of the questions/concerns I hear most often. If you’re wondering about something that’s not included here, feel free to contact me – I’d be happy to answer in person.

 

Q: Help – I’m not photogenic!

A: You probably haven’t been photographed by someone who has studied portraiture. Cameras only produce beautiful results if you know how to use them. Thinking about it is worse than actually doing it. It’s my job to get you smiling and put you at ease.

 

Q: Do you offer studio or on location photography?

A: Both, although the majority of family photography is outdoors or in your home, while headshots are typically done in studio. Whenever possibly I rely on natural light.

 

Q: What kind of photography do you specialize in?

A: I specialize in family photography, including newborns, and business photography, including headshots, and business imagery for the web, including Instagram support. I also offer a unique twist on school photos.

 

Q: Do you do weddings?

A: Rarely. If your wedding is small and intimate and feels like an extended family photo shoot, I might consider it. If you’re looking for a photographer that specializes in weddings, I have two that I highly recommend and will happily refer you to.

 


 

INQUIRIES AND BOOKING 

 

Q: How can I inquire about a shoot?

A: Send me a note via my contact page or by email and I’ll get back to you within 48 hours. I am largely a digital business so bookings are typically done online. I offer 15 minute phone consultations once your booking is complete.

 

Q: What are your office hours?

A: Since I’m often out shooting, I don’t have set hours. On the days I’m not at my computer, I answer emails between 6am – 7am and again by the end of day.

 

Q: When can I book a session?

A: Headshots, business portraits and family sessions typically happen between Monday and Friday. I’m happy to take weekend bookings as well but try to limit them to about one weekend a month, so book early if you’ve got a weekend date in mind.

 

Q: Do you ‘hold’ dates?

A: No. Bookings are done on a first come first serve basis. If you have your heart set on a particular date please submit my booking form and drop me a line.

 

Q: Do you work with clients outside of Toronto?

A: Yes, although there is an extra charge for mileage and gas. It typically works out to about $100.

 

Q: How do I book a session?

A: Step 1: Send me an inquiry letting me know you want to book.

Step 2: I will send you an email back with a contract.

Step 3: You sign the document and e-transfer 50% of the session fee.

Step 4: Once I receive your deposit, I will confirm with you and add your booking to my calendar.

Step 5: I’ll send you an updated contract with my finalized signature.

 

Q: When am I considered officially booked?

A: Once you’ve signed the contract and send me half of the fee.

 

Q: How can I pay for my session?

A: I accept cash, cheque and credit card.

 


 


PREPARING FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT

 

Q: How should I prepare for our photo shoot? 

A: Once you book, I will send you a guide for how to prepare for your photo shoot including what to wear and how to prepare your home, if that’s where your shoot is taking place.

 

Q: Do you offer hair and make up services?

A: For some sessions I do. For headshots and business portraits I work with Shira Ben of The Beauty Movement and can’t recommend her highly enough.

 

Q: What if it’s raining the day of my outdoor shoot?

A: If they’re calling for rain on the day of your outdoor shoot, we will wait until a few hours before your session to decide whether or not to reschedule. If a reschedule is necessary, I will contact you and we’ll reschedule as soon as possible.

 


 


DURING THE PHOTOSHOOT

 

Q: What happens when I arrive?

A: In studio headshots: I will greet you at the door and get you set up with make up.  If there will be outfit changes, we can talk about it at that time.

On-location sessions: if I’m coming to your house we will probably take a few minutes to chat and get to know one another. I will likely show up with camera in hand because it makes it easier for kids to be introduced to me that way.

 

Q: How do I prepare my kids for a photo shoot?

A: Being photographed can be nerve-wracking for adults, but kids typically don’t have the same negative associations with having their picture taken. State the facts – tell them you are being photographed, that you’re really excited, and that Emily has kids so I bet she’ll be fun.

I know it’s hard, but on the day-of, to hang back – the less you intervene, the better the session will be. Kids are encouraged to be themselves – we’ll let them be silly, and I’ll recruit your help if we do need them to calm down, but it has never come to that.

 

Q: Can I add headshots to my family shoot, or group portraits to my office session?

A: Of course. Adding a headshot session is $200 so long as you we discuss the add on before hand. On the day of your session it can be tricky to add in extras due to timing, so please do let me know in advance.

 


 


AFTER YOUR PHOTOSHOOT

 

Q: What happens after our shoot is over?

A: Within two to four weeks (the exact date will be in your contract), your images will be ready to view. You will get an email with the subject “Your Photos Are Ready”. This email will contain a link to an online gallery, where you will be able to view images, download them (if that’s part of your package), purchase prints, and share with family and friends.

 

Q: What if I need my photos back faster?

A: No problem. For individual headshots and families, I charge a $200 fee for a 24-hour rush turnaround, $150 for 48-hour turnaround, and $100 for a 72-hour turnaround. Same day turnaround (for headshots only) is available for a fee of $200.

 

Q: How much retouching do you perform?

A: I do very basic retouching, color correction and editing.

If a photo wall or large scale print is what you desire, my service includes a visit from a designer who can help you decide what your wall can bear and what the best configuration is. If you’re feeling stuck on ideas I have a Pinterest board packed full of amazing ideas that can help you get your creative juices flowing.

Q: How long do your shoots last?

 A: It depends on the type of session. Family sessions are anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the package you choose. Headshots are typically 45 minutes (plus extra time beforehand for makeup). School photos are approximately three minutes per child.
